💫 Ovulation Pain: What Mittelschmerz Can Feel Like

A one-sided twinge around mid-cycle can be normal, but some pelvic pain needs urgent care.

💫 What Ovulation Pain Is

Ovulation pain is pelvic pain that happens around ovulation, when an ovary releases an egg. It is also called mittelschmerz. It often feels like a mild one-sided ache, cramp, pinch, or twinge in the lower belly. It may switch sides from cycle to cycle.

Ovulation usually happens about 14 days before the next period, but that timing varies. Pain alone cannot confirm ovulation, but it can be one clue when combined with cervical mucus changes, cycle timing, ovulation tests, or basal body temperature patterns.

💫 Ovulation Pain Can Feel Like:

  • A mild ache or sharp twinge on one side
  • Pain that lasts minutes to a day or two
  • Light spotting or more slippery cervical mucus around the same time
  • Discomfort that repeats around mid-cycle

💛 What Helps

For mild ovulation pain, rest, heat, hydration, gentle movement, and over-the-counter pain relief may help. Follow medicine labels and check with a clinician if you have health conditions, take other medication, or are unsure what is safe for you.
